Being accepted into the MATPP programme and being part of the Geography Department at the HKU has been the most meaningful and honored experience for me so far. MATPP is a leading and competitive programme in various fields such as shipping, railways, roads and air transport. During the courses, not only did I learn professional knowledge, but the professors and teachers also gave us numerous perspectives and ideas that will last a lifetime, which have also helped to shape my personal outlook on life. Throughout the one-year full-time programme, I also attempted to write my dissertation in English for the first time, and this could not have been done without the help and support of my supervisor, Dr. Ka Ho Tsoi. If I had the chance to choose again, I would not hesitate to choose and join the MATPP programme!

Studying as a two-year part-time student is not easy. Assignments, group projects, examinations, and the dissertation put me under a bit of pressure on top of my day job. Nevertheless, the MATPP programme was worth the effort. In two years, I learnt a lot from the excellent teaching staff, not only from their knowledge, but also their valuable experience. Besides, I am very happy to have met some like-minded friends during the programme. I would definitely recommend this programme to anyone interested in transportation or who loves a challenge.

As a full-time student, I feel that the one-year programme was very comprehensive. The programme equipped me with transport policy and planning knowledge, and allowed me to gain a better understanding of Hong Kong’s transport system.
The programme focused on theoretical aspects through course lectures, but also included field trips and seminars, which provided an opportunity to have open discussions with transport experts from different countries. After completing various group assignments and a dissertation, the MATPP programme enhanced my critical thinking ability and allowed me to apply what I had learnt to practical transport-related issues.

I really appreciate the professors, experts, and classmates that I met during the programme. I would like to thank everyone for their inspiration and support. The MATPP programme was a truly unforgettable experience.

There is no doubt that the MATPP programme provides a broad range of knowledge regarding transportation policy and planning; its coverage spans from theoretical concepts such as mixed-use development to practical skills such as survey and data analysis.
In addition, the MATPP programme brought many transportation professionals together so I could make friends with classmates from other fields, which greatly broadened my horizons. I also learnt a lot from them throughout our ideas exchange and project management in several group projects.

The most remarkable experience from the MATPP programme was the dissertation. Of course, it was not an easy task, but I learnt a lot from it by doing research, gathering information, and developing my ideas through organized writing. I was also encouraged to self-learn and develop the research progressively under the guidance of an experienced supervisor, which not only polished my research and writing skills but was also beneficial to my career as a consultant engineer.

Working in the transport industry as an operator, my understanding of the industry was quite limited. The comprehensive coverage of the MATPP programme regarding transport analysis and modelling, transport economics, transport project management, etc. provided a wider perspective for me to look at the industry. The stress of the research methodology and dissertation guided me along the right path for continuous learning. I am certain that the knowledge from the MATPP programme has strengthened me to further develop in the industry.

How time flew! I can recall the day that I missed the MATPP orientation, which was due to work commitments. I knew that day was very important because I would be able to meet my classmates and understand the key facts about the course so as to lay down a solid foundation before I started the programme. As expected, I did something improper—I recklessly enrolled for the two most difficult subjects in the same semester. In conjunction with a formidable dissertation, I was completely snowed under during this period. Fortunately, I survived that term. Based on my experience, I strongly encourage you to attend orientation day—regardless of your schedule. During the course, I had the opportunity to meet a lot of intelligent and approachable classmates. When I studied with them, they were active and helpful. As such, we easily completed all group projects in an amazingly efficient manner. Among the group projects, I will never forget the Central-Wan Chai bypass. During this project, we had diverse opinions and a conflict of views, and we feared not being able to reach a consensus. We finally made a breakthrough and successfully delivered a great presentation. From this debate, it rendered me a deeper understanding of what transport policy and planning is like in real life. I have now completed the course and will treasure this beautiful memory for the rest of my life. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of my professors, lecturers, and classmates who accompanied me on this amazing journey.

I had one of the best times of my life during the MATPP programme. The courses and dissertation, which may have seemed daunting at first, were extremely worthwhile. Ultimately, this course has expanded my research skills and knowledge of transport policy and planning—particularly in Hong Kong. I loved the fact that my professors encouraged critical thinking in class and during group projects, which is vital for anyone wanting to pursue a career in management, administration, planning, or policy. The diverse group of instructors and classmates made the programme feel like a mini-transport sector, which was amazing. I particularly enjoyed working with others on team projects. Everyone was friendly, approachable, and helpful. Finally, if anyone is debating whether to attend their next field trip, please do not hesitate. Physically experiencing something in your field is much different to a lecture. Overall, I am certain that I have gained a solid understanding of transport policy and planning, and how it relates to urban planning and policy making. Because of this, I feel competent and better-rounded in regards to joining the workforce, and I am more determined to pursue a PhD at some stage. The MATPP programme has also blessed me with life-long friendship, so that is a bonus too!

I would like to thank the teaching staff for the excellence that they provided on the MATPP programme. While solid transport planning knowledge such as transport economics, engineering, surveying, and policy was gained through interactive lectures and seminars, the field trip to Shanghai allowed me to explore the actual development and operations of some major transport infrastructure, i.e. Pudong Airport, an electromagnetic train system, and Yangshan Port, to name a few.

The most valuable part of the programme was the dissertation, which developed my problem-solving skills. I am also happy to have made so many new friends from different transport backgrounds. I would highly recommend this programme to anyone interested in pursuing a career in the transport industry.

During the two-year MATPP programme, the most enjoyable aspects were not only acquiring transport knowledge, but also the sincere friendships that I established with my classmates from different academic and occupational backgrounds. We learned, shared, and worked together towards one goal—particularly during submission deadlines for assignments. I also attended a field trip to Shanghai in October 2003, which was one of the most memorable experiences during the programme. Led by Dr. James Wang and Ms. Zina Wong (our MATPP instructors), we met a number of government officials and visited some major transport infrastructure and facilities in Shanghai. This programme has definitely broadened my personal and career exposure.

I had been in the airline business for 23 years when I took up the MATPP course in 1997. I had always wanted to improve myself academically in the transportation field, and had been searching for some avenues to pursue this. However, there were no courses that completely matched my requirements, as I wished to blend my practical experience along with some theories in academia. The first MATPP programme came along in 1997, and I was really impressed by it. I thoroughly enjoyed the days on the MATPP programme. Not only did I find what I wanted, but I also cultivated great friendships through the programme. Ten years after graduation, we still fondly reminisce about our experience. Though it was hard work right from the start with Dr Loo, we indulged in the sharing and challenges every minute.
