WHY MTP&P?

The Master of Transport Policy and Planning (MTP&P) programme, formerly Master of Arts in Transport Policy and Planning (MATPP), is the leading programme of its kind in Asia, specializing in transport policy and planning. Its comprehensiveness and multi-disciplinary nature trains students to deal with various transport issues from different angles and perspectives.

This programme is highly relevant to the needs of the contemporary world of transport. Students not only learn about fundamental transport knowledge and the latest developments in the field but also essential communication and presentation skills. A heavy emphasis is placed on developing students’ critical and analytical mindsets. These qualities are highly valued by employers in the transport industry.

The programme’s sharp focus on policy and planning is particularly important in providing government officials with solid knowledge about theories and the latest local and overseas developments in transport policy and planning. Graduates are equipped to help draw up well-considered transport policies and plans that are suitable for local contexts.

For students based outside of Hong Kong (including mainland China), the one-year fulltime mode offers the best-quality intensive academic and professional education in transport policy and planning to allow graduates to bring new ideas and insights into their organizations, cities and/or countries. Delivered in English, the MTP&P programme warmly welcomes students from around the world.

The MTP&P qualifications are widely recognized and highly regarded both within the public and private sectors. It receives the full accreditation of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and is accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) as a Specialist programme for those who would like to specialize in transport policy and planning.

In addition to senior government officials and senior personnel from private firms contributing to the programme as teachers and invited guest speakers, the MATPP Alumni Association helps to foster closer ties among teachers, graduates, and fellow students. Graduates are able to broaden their professional networks with the support of a strong alumni network.

The MTP&P programme is subject to stringent reviews by external examiners from top overseas universities. Moreover, the programme regularly undergoes vigorous reviews by The University of Hong Kong and the leading professional organizations in the transport and planning fields to ensure that it is of the highest standard both in terms of academic content and professional relevancy.

FEEDBACK FROM GRADUATES

The MTP&P programme has given me a complete knowledge loop, from engineering practice to system planning and policy analysis. My undergraduate studies focused on railway transport organisation, while MTP&P helped me step beyond a single technical perspective and examine transport issues at a system level. The field trip to Seoul Metro was especially valuable: it gave me direct insight into metro operations, maintenance, and passenger-flow management. Courses about ESG also provided a sustainability evaluation framework that is highly relevant to the future of railway transport. These experiences have strengthened my ability to compare transport models across regions and scenarios. It also taught me to connect policy, planning, and daily operations in a more integrated way. As I prepare for a career in railway operations and transport scheduling, the programme’s global perspective and cross-disciplinary training continue to shape my professional growth. I highly recommend MTP&P to future applicants who want both analytical depth and practical exposure.

As a transport enthusiast, I found the MATPP programme an intellectually enriching and personally rewarding opportunity to pursue my passion.  I especially valued its blend of academic knowledge and practical insights from industry veterans.  The dissertation was a highlight of my journey, allowing me to explore a topic of personal interest through a structured and rigorous research process.  Learning alongside classmates from diverse background who shared my enthusiasm for transport made the experience truly memorable.

What I valued most from MTP&P was learning to look at real-world problems from the perspectives of transport, planning and policy, while using data to support my analysis. I particularly enjoyed learning through real cases from Hong Kong and other parts of the world, as they helped me connect what we learned in class with actual transport issues and understand the different needs behind planning decisions.

Another memorable part of the programme was working with classmates from different academic and cultural backgrounds. Our discussions often showed me that the same problem could be understood in very different ways.

Now that I work in supply chain area, I still find the systematic and data-driven way of thinking I developed in MTP&P very useful. For me, the programme was not only about learning transport knowledge, but also about learning how to understand complex problems from different perspectives and make more well-grounded decisions.
